1978年农历7月14日是我一生中最难忘的日子，当时我在南口前镇中学读书，初中住校我是初一(2班)的班长和校宿舍二个支部的团委书记，当天早晨刚上课，突然接到镇民政局于文举助理给校领导打来的电话说：“我父亲赵成海患肾癌晚期病危在县医院，叫我立即赶紧过去见父亲一面。”我当时听后，如晴天惊雷，惊慌的赶到了县医院见到病危即将咽气的父亲。父亲见我来了，手拉着我吃力的说:“儿子，我提着一口气没咽就是要见你最后一面，爸爸有事要留给你。”我当时一听急了，两行眼泪流了下来，哭着对父亲说：“爸爸您千万别走，现家里外祖母岁数大了身体有病，我母亲有病瘫痪，大妹妹十三岁，小妹妹五岁，外边又欠了一些外债，您走了叫儿子我怎么办呐？”父亲当时听到这，反问我说：“孩子，你不是说祖国是伟大的母亲吗？”我回答：“对呀。”父亲当时又问我说：“那你知道父亲是谁吗？”我当时惊奇回答说：“父亲是您哪？”可爸爸严肃的说：“不对，不全对。父亲是共产党是人民政府。你知道共产党前面为什么有“中国”二字吗？那中国二字就是全体中国人民。中国共产党是人民自己的党。你们要永远听党的话、忠于党、跟党走，堂堂正正做人，本本分分的干事，把家庭生活重担挑起来，孝敬外祖母和母亲，照顾好妹妹，有重大的困难解决不了就去找党找政府帮忙解决。做人要坚强，不要怕，困难是人克服的。你现在正是读书的关键时期，为了这个家，书你就不能念了，将来好了有机会再学吧，你不要怪爸爸。现在我就把家交给你了。我的病我自己知道治不了了，可我不想死在这医院，我想回家看看你妈还有乡村们，快带我出院回家吧。”出院回家以后，我母亲对我说：“儿子，从现在开始你一分钟都不要离开你爸，一定要亲眼看到你爸咽下最后一口气，给他老人家送终。”我当时流着泪水看到我爸咽下这最后一口气时，我又惊奇的发现我爸人去世了可眼睛是睁着的，口是张开的，这时我母亲哭着对我父亲说：“赵成海呀，我知道你从小受苦给地主扛活，47年参加中国人民解放军，54年从抗美援朝战场转业、抗战八年后现在祖国人民都过上好日子了，你要走了，担心我母亲岁数大了有病身体不好，我有病瘫痪，女儿们太小，你放心不下。你放心走吧，我们生活困难有党和政府救济和关怀，再说你儿子今年已经成人了，十八岁能劳动了，你放心安心走吧。”说来奇怪，我父亲听到这他张开的口闭上了，睁着的眼也闭上了，面目很安祥，像睡着一样走了。父亲去世是乡亲们和村委会帮忙安葬的。
